A hernia is the medical condition in which a part of the body protrudes through an abnormal opening.
Dr Lord performs operations for inguinal (groin) hernias, umbilical (navel or belly button) hernias, incisional hernias (which are hernias through the scar from a previous surgical incision), and femoral hernias, which are a less common form of groin hernia. Hiatus hernias are hernias in which part of the stomach is abnormally located in the chest rather than being fully within the abdomen. Hiatus hernias are important because of their association with gastro oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), Barrett’s oesophagus, and oesophageal adenocarcinoma. More information on hiatus hernias can be found in the sections of this website which deal with those oesophageal diseases.
